Jean D Waugh

Events

Jean Ross (Duthie) Waugh passed away Feb. 21, 2019, at the Abbington in Heber, Utah. She was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Newton Center, MA, the youngest daughter of John Whyte Duthie and Emily Broomer. She fell in love with baseball and the Boston Red Sox as a young girl attending Ladies Day at Fenway Park with her aunt and keeping score by the radio with her uncle. Uncharacteristically of the time, all four of John and Emily's daughters graduated from college. Jean traveled the furthest from home and attended Oberlin College, sight unseen, in 1940 and graduated in 1944. There she met Thomas Toan Waugh whom she married on May 11, 1946, in Newton Center. She was a mother, teacher, traveler and chocolate lover. Most who knew her were impressed with her interest in others and desire to learn. She taught U.S. history and psychology at North Central High School for many years and was a member of First Congregational Church in Indianapolis, IN. While teaching she earned a master's in education at Butler University in Indianapolis, 1979. After the death of her husband in 1987, she moved to Fairfield Glade where she lead a very active independent life playing golf, a proud member of the "Bag Ladies," playing bridge, attending book club, walking her dog along the fifth fairway, and going to the Cumberland County Playhouse. She loved driving cross country solo numerous times to visit friends, children and grandchildren. Jean read the newspaper and did the crossword daily, always loved a gin and tonic after the work day, remained a loyal Red Sox fan throughout her life and enjoyed traveling with friends and family around the world. She is survived by three children and eight grandchildren. Her sisters, husband and one son preceded her in death.
Jean will be remembered for her kind heart, passion as a teacher, guidance she offered to her loved ones, and of course, her famous chocolate birthday cake.
