Georganne "Jan"'s Story
Jan Barcus, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on Feb. 18, 2017, at The Cumberland House hospice in Crossville, with her two sons at her side. She was 92. May she rest forever in the Divine Bliss of God's Perfect Radiance.
Born Georganne Coon in Evanston, IL, she lived there until age eight when her family moved to Webster Groves, MO. Jan was the eldest daughter of Lloyd and Elizabeth Coon. She attended Webster Groves High School and then on to Drury College in Springfield, MO. In 1946 Jan transferred to the University of Illinois in Champaign where she met her future husband, Hal Barcus. They became engaged after a whirlwind 10-day courtship and were married in December of that year - a marriage that lasted 65 years!
Shortly after the birth of their first son, Harold (Chip), in 1949 they moved to Oxford, OH, where Hal had accepted a teaching position at Miami University. Their second son and only other child, David, was born a few years later.
Jan was the epitome of the active full-time homemaker. Utterly devoted to her husband and to raising her sons with unconditional love and every advantage she could manage for them, she was involved in PTA, Cub Scouts and every kind of school and family related activity.
Her selfless service extended to her community as well. She was president of both the Oxford Women's Club and the Miami Women's Club. She participated in the Current Events Club, the Heart Fund and served in the gift shop at the hospital. A member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Jan was always available for church events, and she was proud to have been a founder of the "Meals on Wheels" program in Oxford. She also remained active in the Miami chapter of her college sorority, Kappa Delta.
In 1964 Jan joined the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO Sisterhood), dedicated to supporting higher education and life opportunities for women, in which she remained active for the rest of her life.
With a quick smile and an open heart, Jan always spoke kindly of anyone she knew. She was the kind of person people liked to be around and she always had a large circle of friends. Jan and Hal loved a good party and took advantage of every opportunity to enjoy good times with their friends and family.
Retiring in 1992 they moved to a home on a golf course in Fairfield Glade, TN. Jan never missed a beat, continuing to attract friends and offer service wherever she went. Her life was filled with social events, golf, Bridge clubs, travel, church, community and of course her husband and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hal, brother Jack, sisters Mary Jane and Nancy, and grandson Dustin. She is survived by her sons Chip (Ben Lomond, CA) and David (Crossville), grandchildren Jason Barcus (Crossville), Skye Barcus (Ben Lomond, CA), Brianna Ancel (Los Angeles, CA), Beau Barcus (Santa Cruz, CA), and great grandchildren Brendan Barcus, Logan Barcus and Waylon Barcus.
There will be a celebration of Jan's life at the Fairfield Glade Community Church, 521 Snead Dr., Fairfield Glade on March 3, 2017, at 2 p.m. All friends and family are invited.
Donations are welcome in the name of Georganne Barcus to Cottey College c/o Institutional Advancement, 1000 W Austin Blvd., Nevada, MO 64772.
